Sprinter vs Transit vs ProMaster: Which Van Platform is Right for You?
Choosing the right van platform is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make before your build even starts. The Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, and Ram ProMaster are the three most popular platforms for camper van conversions — and they each have real strengths and weaknesses.
After building 60+ vans across all three platforms, here’s our honest take.
The Quick Comparison

- 144″ or 170″ wheelbase
- AWD available (factory)
- Diesel engine standard
- Best resale value
- Most expensive to buy
- Most expensive to repair
- Interior height: up to 6’3″
Ford Transit
- 130″, 148″, or 148″ EL wheelbase
- AWD available
- Gas or diesel options
- Cheapest parts & service
- Most affordable to buy
- Widest dealer network
- Interior height: up to 6’6″
Ram ProMaster
- 136″ or 159″ wheelbase
- FWD only (no AWD)
- Gas engine standard
- Widest interior (flat floor)
- Best turning radius
- Lowest price point
- Interior height: up to 6’4″
Mercedes Sprinter: The Gold Standard
The Sprinter is the most popular van platform for professional conversions, and for good reason. It’s the most refined driving experience, holds its value better than any other platform, and the factory AWD system is genuinely capable off-road.
Pros
- Best resale value — Sprinter builds consistently sell for more
- Factory AWD — True all-wheel drive, not just a traction control system
- Diesel efficiency — 16-20 MPG depending on build weight
- Build quality — Mercedes engineering shows in how the van drives and holds up
- Aftermarket support — Huge ecosystem of Sprinter-specific parts and accessories
Cons
- Most expensive — New Sprinter AWD 170s run $65-75K before any conversion
- Expensive repairs — Mercedes parts and specialized service centers
- DEF system — The diesel emissions system can be finicky and expensive to repair
- Narrower interior — About 70″ between wheel wells vs. 73″ on a Transit
Ford Transit: The Smart Money Pick
The Transit has been gaining ground fast in the van build world. It’s the most practical choice for a lot of people — affordable to buy, cheap to maintain, and Ford dealers are everywhere.
Pros
- Affordable — $15-20K less than a comparable Sprinter
- Cheapest to maintain — Ford parts are widely available and affordable
- Tallest interior — High roof Transit gives you up to 6’6″ of standing room
- Gas option — The 3.5L EcoBoost is powerful and parts are cheap
- Dealer network — Ford dealers everywhere means easy service on the road
Cons
- Lower resale — Transits don’t hold value as well as Sprinters
- Gas mileage — 14-17 MPG with the gas engine (diesel is better but less common)
- AWD is newer — Ford’s AWD system is newer and less proven than Sprinter’s
- Less “premium” feel — The driving experience is good but not Sprinter-level refined
Ram ProMaster: The Interior Space King
The ProMaster is the dark horse. It doesn’t get as much attention, but it has a genuinely unique advantage: a front-wheel drive layout that gives you a completely flat, low floor — and the widest interior of any platform.
Pros
- Widest interior — That flat floor with no wheel wells intruding is a game-changer for layout options
- Lowest floor height — Easier to get in and out, lower center of gravity
- Best turning radius — FWD gives it a turning circle more like a car than a van
- Most affordable — Lowest entry price of the three
- Simple mechanicals — The Pentastar V6 is a well-known, reliable engine
Cons
- No AWD — This is the big one. FWD only, no factory AWD option
- Lower resale — ProMaster builds resell for less than the other two
- Driving experience — The FWD layout means different handling, especially in crosswinds
- Less aftermarket — Fewer Sprinter-specific accessories and parts available
So Which One Should You Choose?
Choose a Sprinter if…
You want the best resale value, plan to go off-grid/off-road, and are willing to pay a premium for the best overall package. This is our most-requested platform and the base for our FamVan spec model.
Choose a Transit if…
You want the best bang for your buck, prioritize easy/affordable maintenance, and value maximum headroom. This is the base for our Baseline spec model — and we think it’s the smartest entry point into van life.
Choose a ProMaster if…
You need the widest possible interior, want the lowest floor, and don’t need AWD. Great for full-time living and urban use where the tight turning radius shines.
Our Recommendation
After building on all three platforms, here’s our honest advice: don’t overthink it. All three are excellent vans for conversion. The best platform is the one that fits your budget, your use case, and your priorities.
If you’re not sure, come by the shop. We’ve built on all three and can walk you through the tradeoffs in person. Sometimes sitting inside each platform for five minutes tells you more than reading a dozen articles.
