Drifter: Inside Our Compact Adventure Van Model

Drifter: Inside Our Compact Adventure Van Model

Some vans are designed in a spreadsheet. Drifter was forged on the road. What started as a one-off custom build in our Jacksonville shop quickly became one of the most talked-about vans we’ve ever produced—and it performed so well that we made it a permanent part of our 2026 spec lineup. If you’ve been searching for a compact adventure van that punches far above its size, this is the build you’ve been waiting for.

At Beachside Custom Vans, we’ve built well over 100 vans, from sprawling family rigs to minimalist weekenders. Drifter sits in a sweet spot we kept hearing customers ask for: a nimble, go-anywhere Mercedes Sprinter 144 wheelbase build that doesn’t sacrifice off-grid capability or everyday comfort. In this guide, we’ll take you inside the Drifter—every system, every hidden feature, and every design decision that makes it special.

Why a Compact Adventure Van?

There’s a reason the 144-inch wheelbase Sprinter has become the darling of the van life world. It’s long enough to fit a real bed, a full kitchen, and a proper electrical system, yet short enough to park in a standard space, navigate tight forest roads, and handle like a normal vehicle. For couples, solo travelers, and weekend adventurers, the compact footprint is a feature, not a compromise.

Drifter sleeps two and seats two to three, making it the ideal rig for partners chasing surf, snow, and everything in between. Here in Florida, that might mean a sunrise paddle out at the beach and a sunset cookout in the dunes. Out west, it means slipping into trailheads and boondocking spots that bigger 170-inch vans simply can’t reach. Drifter was built to go where the adventure is—and to keep you comfortable once you get there.

The Power System: Built to Stay Off-Grid

If there’s one area where the Drifter refuses to compromise, it’s electrical. We built it around a Victron Energy system—the gold standard for off-grid van power—so you can stay unplugged for days without stress.

Battery Bank: Two 200Ah 12V lithium batteries give you 400Ah of usable power, enough to run your fridge, lights, fans, and devices through multiple cloudy days.

3000W Inverter/Charger: Run the induction cooktop, charge laptops and camera gear, or power the microwave—all without a generator.

Charging Inputs: A 50A DC-DC charger tops off the batteries from the alternator as you drive, 200 watts of rooftop solar keeps you powered while parked, and 30A shore power gets you to full quickly when a plug is available.

Smart Monitoring: A Victron Cerbo GX Touch control panel puts battery state, solar input, water levels, and overall system health right at your fingertips. No guessing—just a glance.

Best of all, the system is fully expandable and prewired for Starlink, so you can add capacity or stay connected from the most remote corners of the country. If you want to dig deeper into sizing a system like this, our team covers the fundamentals in detail when you visit the shop.

The Kitchen: Small Footprint, Full Capability

A compact van doesn’t mean compact cooking. Drifter’s galley was designed for people who actually cook on the road, not just heat up the occasional can of beans.

At its heart is a GE 4-in-1 appliance—a microwave, convection oven, air fryer, and broiler all in one unit. Pair that with an induction cooktop for fast, flame-free cooking and a Dometic NRX115 fridge/freezer to keep a week of groceries cold. Solid surface countertops give you a durable, easy-to-clean workspace that looks as good as it performs.

It’s a kitchen that lets you eat like you’re at home, whether you’re whipping up breakfast burritos at the trailhead or searing fresh-caught fish after a day on the water.

Water and Bathroom: Simple, Smart, Self-Contained

Drifter carries a 30-gallon freshwater tank paired with a 16-gallon gray water tank, giving you real capacity for dishes, cleaning, and staying fresh between fill-ups. A 4-gallon Bosch hot water heater with a 12V pump and accumulator delivers steady, on-demand hot water—a luxury that makes a huge difference after a cold morning surf or a dusty hike.

For the bathroom, we went with a Laveo dry flush toilet. It’s completely smell-proof, requires no plumbing or black tank, and is genuinely the easiest waste system on the market. Combined with an exterior shower for rinsing off gear, sand, and salt before you climb back in, the Drifter keeps things clean without the complexity of a full wet bath.

Climate Control for Every Season

We build vans in Florida, so we know a thing or two about beating the heat—and the Drifter is ready for it. A Velit 12V air conditioner runs efficiently off the battery bank, keeping you cool on muggy summer nights without needing shore power. A MaxxAir fan moves air and pulls heat out, while 3M Thinsulate insulation wrapped throughout the build keeps the interior temperature stable.

When the temperature drops, an Espar diesel heater sips fuel from the van’s tank to keep the cabin toasty—perfect for chasing winter snowboarding in the mountains or cold-weather camping. The result is a van that’s genuinely four-season capable, from a humid Jacksonville August to a frosty Colorado December.

Hidden Features and Smart Storage

This is where the Drifter really earns its reputation. The details set it apart, and many of them you won’t even notice until you need them.

Fixed Bed with Massive Storage: No folding, no converting, no nightly setup. Drifter has a real fixed bed with a cavernous garage underneath for bikes, boards, gear bins, and everything you bring along.

Drop-Down Cabinet: A hidden drop-down cabinet tucked behind the kitchen panel gives you extra storage that stays completely out of the way until the moment you need it.

Dedicated Closet: A real closet with hanging space and shelving—not just bins shoved under the bed. Your clothes stay organized, accessible, and wrinkle-free.

Overhead Cabinets with Marine-Grade Latches: Custom overhead storage throughout, every door secured with marine-grade push-pop latches built to handle washboard roads and open with one hand at any angle.

Built for the Trail: Exterior Features

Drifter looks the part because it’s built to do the work. Every exterior component was hand-picked for durability and real-world function:

Roof rack and ladder for rooftop gear and easy access. A retractable awning for instant shade at camp. Flarespace flares that widen the sleeping area so you can stretch out side to side. Four AM Auto windows to flood the interior with natural light and airflow. Side steps for easy entry, a rear storage carrier for bulky gear, and a spare tire carrier mounted on the rear door so you’re never stranded.

Underneath, upgraded wheels and all-terrain tires give the Drifter the grip and confidence to leave the pavement behind. And a factory 360-degree camera system makes tight trails and crowded parking lots far less stressful.

Who Is the Drifter For?

Drifter is the perfect match for couples and solo adventurers who want a van they can actually drive every day, park anywhere, and take off-grid for a week at a time. It’s for the surfer chasing swell up and down the coast, the weekend warrior loading up Friday after work, and the remote worker who wants Starlink-ready power and a real kitchen wherever the road leads.

If you need to sleep a family of four, our larger spec models like the FamVan might be a better fit. But if you want maximum capability in a minimal footprint, the Drifter is hard to beat.

See the Drifter for Yourself

Drifter proves that you don’t need a giant van to live large on the road. With a Victron-powered electrical system, a full kitchen, four-season climate control, and clever storage hidden around every corner, it delivers everything a serious adventurer needs in a compact, nimble package.
